Color Wheel (E)Motion

Color Wheel (E)Motion is an early exploration into color in my quilting journey, where I began to play with gradations in color and value creating ombre-like effects. The name of the quilt references the movement inherent in the circular design of the color wheel, which takes us on a journey of the emotions that colors and their different values stir in us as we transition from one hue to the next. The way the color wheel has been pulled apart and reformed into twisting, overlapping pathways brings to mind memories from my childhood: board games, roller coasters, trains, and the twisting trails I forged in the woods behind my house. These memories are emotional, colorful, and also embody movement in the form of game pieces moving toward a goal, the speed of trains and roller coasters on their tracks, or the excitement of running through the woods to reach a secret hiding spot.

The curved design of the quilt and construction techniques was informed in part by Sherri Lynn Wood’s “Get Your Curve On” improv score.
