Pine Burr Study No. 1

Pine Burr Study No. 1 is an exploration of utility. The quilt was created using scrap fabrics, thrifted fabrics, upcycled clothes, and even an old cloth napkin. The pine burr was popularized by Black quilters in the south and is the official state quilt of Alabama (the only state to have an official quilt). A pattern written by Loretta Pettway Bennett, a Gee’s Bend quilter, was used as a guide for understanding the process of constructing a pine burr quilt. The pattern is free and available on the Alabama Department of Archives and History website.
